# Mastering the Delete Key on macOS Tahoe

For users switching from Windows, the "Delete" key on a Mac keyboard can be confusing. It is labeled "delete," but it behaves like "Backspace." Here is how to master text deletion and file management using the keyboard.

## Text Deletion

### 1. The Standard Delete (Backspace)
The key labeled **delete** located at the top-right of the main keyboard area deletes the character **to the left** of the cursor.
*   **Action**: Backspace.

### 2. Forward Delete
To delete the character **to the right** of the cursor (like the "Del" key on a Windows keyboard):
*   **Shortcut**: Hold **Fn** (Function) and press **Delete**.
*   *Note*: On full-sized Apple keyboards with a number pad, there is a dedicated "Forward Delete" key (often labeled with a symbol `⌦`).

### 3. Deleting Words and Lines
Speed up your typing with these modifiers:
*   **Option + Delete**: Deletes the entire word to the left of the cursor.
*   **Command + Delete**: Deletes everything from the cursor to the beginning of the line.

## File Management in Finder

You cannot delete a file in Finder simply by pressing the Delete key (this is a safety feature).

### 1. Move to Trash
To delete a file or folder:
*   **Shortcut**: Press **Command + Delete**.
*   **Sound**: You will hear a crumpling paper sound confirming the action.

### 2. Empty Trash
To permanently delete items in the Trash:
*   **Shortcut**: Press **Command + Shift + Delete**.
*   **Confirmation**: A warning dialog will appear.
*   **Skip Confirmation**: Press **Command + Shift + Option + Delete** to empty the Trash immediately without asking.
